A standard 35mm slightly skewed to a wide-angle lens with built-in VC provides an MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of 0.2m. This lens achieves superb imaging performance at full aperture with well-balanced depictive capability. State-of-the-art design and engineering technologies backed by manufacturing know-how culminate in this fine lens.

High performance at f/1.8 full aperture

The open aperture is set to f/1.8 with optimised critical properties at a higher level: superb optical performance coupled with a VC system, a shorter MOD, and a well-balanced form factor. Rigorous simulation processes performed throughout the design phase are materialised in distinguished resolving power and beautifully tuned background blur, a prominent feature to a fast-aperture, full-frame compliant optic.

VC (Vibration Compensation) integration sets itself apart

VC really comes into its own when used on high-resolving professional DSLRs which pick up even subtle camera shake. On fast-aperture lenses, VC dramatically extends the ability to shoot handheld under dim light conditions by eliminating camera shake at slower shutter speeds.

USD (Ultrasonic Drive)

The USD actuator converts ultrasonic waves into rotational motion that delivers autofocus with responsiveness, accuracy, and speed without so much as a whisper. The photographer can easily use manual focus at any point while the AF system is operating without having to fumble for a switch.

‘Travelling waves’ generate a fast, smooth AF movement

This extremely quiet motor is ideal for photography of events, weddings, theatre or musical performances, as well as crucial moments on the golf course – any situation where autofocus noise is obtrusive. Major improvements in autofocus response and tracking ability over standard DC motors make for instantaneous focusing and spontaneous shooting of rapidly moving subjects.

Tamron’s USD works with the high-frequency ultrasonic vibrations that are produced by a ring called a ‘stator’. Energy from the vibrations is used to rotate an attached metallic ring known as the ‘rotor’. Piezoelectric ceramic is a material that produces ultrasonic vibrations when voltage of a specific frequency is applied is arranged in a ring formation on the stator. This electrode configuration of piezoelectric ceramic causes two ultrasonic vibrations to occur in the stator.

By effectively combining these two ultrasonic vibrations, it is possible to convert the energy from the vibrations that produce simple motion into energy known as ‘deflective travelling waves’, which move around the circumference of the ring. The friction between these deflective travelling waves created on the metallic surface of the stator and the surface of the rotor produces force, causing the rotor to rotate. Attached to the rotor is the focusing lens, which is given a fast, smooth autofocus movement.
